Artist Statement
Lentic: of or relating to or living in still waters


When I first came to China in April of 2007, I knew I had been here before. There must be few experiences as powerful as past-life memories. It washed over me as gently and matter-of-factly as light envelops morning leaving me forever changed. I felt adjusted, aligned, able to walk distinctly into my future without the constant question of “when?”– the heavy fog of doubt that comes from constant goals and destinations as of yet unattained. This journey has been a culmination of all my journeys and only offers more to come. What we have been and what we will be is entirely what we are. No regrets, only gratitude.
And with these new steps into a new awakening of self, came music, new and different music, like nothing I had ever written before. This reinvention is thanks to a lot of things, but most notably a new environment, language, culture, Garageband on my laptop, and time, the great elusive ingredient I felt was missing during too many years on the road without a break. Yes, time: it’s all we really have. It offers itself freely in every moment. It’s here now. It was always here.

Then, I met Tim Rideout. Not only a talented producer, he is a truly good person in this world whose creativity, talent and belief in this project enabled it to evolve into what I offer you here. Together, we took my tracks from the point of ‘ideas captured’ to ‘ideas realized’.
Thanks to technology across continents and time zones, we made this record in Montreal and Beijing, simultaneously. We defied distance.

“Ember Swift” (my given name) has also been a project name for over a decade now. Now, for the first time in my music career, I’m choosing to be a person only and to give my project a new name that reflects the changes, the progress, the rebirth. “Lentic” as an adjective describes my new pace of life, not to mention embodying the opposite meaning of “Ember Swift” (fire and speed). When I hold this name next to my new body of work, I can breathe.

It’s about time.
